For the month of October, all donations will be going to James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital located in Greenville, North Carolina, USA.
James and Connie Maynard Children's Hospital (JCMCH) opened in 2013 and is the pediatric hospital adjacently attached to Vidant Medical Center, serving 29 counties all across eastern North Carolina. JCMCH houses pediatric-specific wings including:
- General Pediatrics
- Kids Immunosuppressed Speciality Unit (KISU)
- Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
- Pediatric Day Medical Ambulatory Unit (PDAY)
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
- Special Care Nursery
Separate from the hospital, there is also a Pediatric Emergency Department and a Pediatric Rehabilitation Program.
JCMCH claims, "Every inch of our 78,000-square-foot facility was designed with children’s needs in mind. Beyond the shape of the building itself and the ocean theme throughout, the following features are just a few of the innovative ways we help reduce children’s anxieties and keep families close together:
Multi-touch interactive wall in the waiting room
Diversion rooms to relax and calm children during certain procedures
Play spaces for younger patients to socialize with friends, siblings and other patients; teen lounge for 11 and older
Play therapy island, an outdoor healing environment
Video games in room via hospital laptops with age-appropriate games
Seascape theater for events that you can attend or stream to your room"
With the help of a large interdisciplinary staff, JCMCH practices child-focused, family-centered care within every unit.
JCMCH is here for the whole family. "Right on the first floor, siblings and friends can enjoy the swings, climbing structures and basketball court in the play therapy yard. Our Family Resource Center is ready to answer any questions you might have, and we’re always happy to tell you about the many ongoing services we offer outside the hospital, too, such as camps for kids, an injury prevention program, a school nurse program and more.
Families can relax, do laundry and shower at the Ronald McDonald House six-room retreat, located right inside the hospital, just steps away from the pediatric units. Just across the street from Vidant Medical Center, The Ronald McDonald House of Eastern North Carolina provides temporary housing for families who are caring for sick or injured children receiving treatment at area medical facilities. It offers the comforts of home and and a welcoming environment where families can rest, prepare hot meals and share their concerns with other parents in similar situations."
JCMCH have a team of Child Life Specialists, CLS, that "are devoted to making a child’s hospital experience as understandable and close to his or her normal life as possible. Our focus is on making every child’s experience easier to bear and, by extension, providing support for parents.
Child life specialists provide services in our inpatient and outpatient units. The team uses play, education and self-expression to promote the patient’s well-being and development. They also explain procedures in a way that helps children and families understand the unfamiliar medical environment."
